The couple who stopped off at a Travelodge - and stayed 22 years

For most of us who visit a Travelodge, it is a fleeting pleasure. Park the car, go to bed and get away as early as possible in the morning. But for David and Jean Davidson, it is home. They arrived in 1985, and enjoyed it so much that they never left.

This sound like a contrived story to me. Who in their right mind would go and stay at a hotel for 22 years? I hate to go and stay for a week much less 22 freaking years? I can see that they are elderly, but are they insane as well? I might be less expensive than a house, but where do you cook and what happens if the hotel changes hands during that period? And what happened to their house?

What would happen if they family wanted to "visit" them? I can hear it now; Jim, check into room 104. That is the one that has the adjoining door with our room. It also has a micro fridge and a coffee maker.

Kind of leaves a bad taste in your mouth?

I wonder how creamy it really was? If i found a rubber in a can of soup i would want more than a "cupon" Perhaps they should have read the label. Creamy or Chunky anyone? Trojan or Durex?

Soupcon of rubber leads to food suit
By Felisa Cardona Denver Post Staff Writer

A Fort Collins family says in a federal lawsuit that they found a condom at the bottom of a Campbell's Soup can after the cream of mushroom dinner they had started eating tasted bad.
"We think it's highly unlikely that this occurred and we take all claims of product contamination very seriously," said Campbell Soup Co. spokesman Anthony Sanzio.

Audrey Smith, 63, heated the soup on Nov. 20, 2006, and she and Doyle Smith, 64, and Shane Smith, 42, noticed an unusual taste and looked inside the can, according to a lawsuit filed by the family in U.S. District Court.

"The foul taste was apparently caused by the presence of a large piece of rubber lodged at the bottom of the can," the suit says. "Upon further examination, it appeared to the Smiths that the rubber was, in fact, a condom."

After the Smiths noticed the latex, they immediately became nauseous and overcome with fear that they had been exposed to disease.

The family went to the emergency room and had blood drawn and tests performed.
Doyle Smith contacted Campbell Soup to complain and the lawsuit says the company refused to pay the family's medical expenses and offered the Smiths a coupon for a discount on their next purchase of soup.

The Smiths gave Campbell Soup a portion of the rubber for testing.
On March 19, Campbell Soup officials told the Smith family that laboratory analysis determined the rubber was latex but could not be positively identified, according to the suit.

9/11 issues. We will never forget!

Where were you on this morning when the plans crashed into the Pentagon, World Trade Towers, and the ground in Pennsylvania? I was living in Austin Texas and I was at work. I did not hear about this until I came in for break and saw it on the TV, as a matter of fact; all TV stations were broadcasting this tragic occurrence.

Now to see this as a headline about a school in Utah or any school for that matter makes my blood boil:

"Utah Schools Will Not Observe 9/11 Anniversary
Several Utah schools have decided to let Sept. 11, 2007 pass without observing the sixth anniversary of the unprecedented terror attacks against the United States -- over fear of re-kindling the haunting memories for those who vaguely remember them, or introducing them to children who weren't born yet. This year, Sept. 11 falls on a Tuesday for the first since since the actual attacks. But some school administrators believe that commemorating the tragedy may inhibit the ability for students to make forward progress.

"We don't want our kids thinking about that. We want them to move on,'' said Beth Johnston, principal at East Layton Elementary in Davis County, whose oldest student was just 6 on Sept. 11, 2001. "It might be age-appropriate for older students to acknowledge and talk about it, but for our younger kids, we don't want them to dwell on violence."Education officials say it can be difficult to explain to young children what happened on that day, because of the many factors and political reasons linked to the terror strike."

There is so much additional context and so many other stories there, that it can become daunting to a teacher to figure out how to be selective enough, sensitive enough and to provide the right balance and depth,'' said Robert Austin, a social studies specialist for the Utah State Office of Education. The terrorist attacks are currently not part of Utah's core social studies curriculum, but they could become so later this year when the required studies are updated.

But still, many schools will observe the sixth anniversary since the World Trade Center towers fell in New York City and the Pentagon was damaged in Washington, D.C.Eastwood Elementary School in Salt Lake City generally observes a moment of silence, secretary Tina Jensen said. "We try to keep it pretty low key because some of the kids weren't even born. We try not to scare them,'' she said. Indeed, many students because of age barely remember it and feel little emotional connection.

West High School history teacher Dave Harper said he teaches students about Sept. 11 at the end of the school year, when he presents the tragedy within the context of global conflicts between cultures and explains how the attacks led to later events. Scott Crump of Bingham High School in South Jordan asks his students to write essays about whether they would like to be remembered as the "9/11 generation.''

Eagle Mountain's Eagle Valley Elementary School plans to have a National Guard member speak to students about patriotism. The school will have a Humvee behind the school during lunch. Students will wear red, white and blue Wednesday. "It's important to continue to teach our students about the importance of the sacrifice... and not just forget 9/11,'' Principal Keith Conley said. "That's why we've asked men and women to serve throughout the world to protect the United States.''

This to me is like trying to tell the children that the War in Iraq is not going on and that their parent or relative that is in the armed forces did not get killed. It is kind of like saying "Nothing to see here, move along" It is part of our history and it should be taught and children should have to learn about it because it could happen again. If another terrorist attach happens in the USA, a child might say why did this happen not knowing that it has happened before in the USA. I think that knowledge is power and not knowing what happened in your past even if it is only six years ago, can only lead to making us weaker, not stronger.

It is a harsh reality that we have to face now living in the USA. Terrorist attacks have been happening for years all over the world and we thought that it could not happen here on our soil; anyone remember December 7, 1941? Japan was not terrorists but they attacked US soil. I was not alive when Japan attacked us but i was taught about it. It did not scare me. Should the schools in Utah not teach that as well? Lets just face it folks, it is apart of the history of the USA and as such, good or bad, it should be remembered for posterity’s sake for all the people that lost their lives in this horrible attack.

If this pisses you off as much as it does me, just use the hyperlink embedded in her name and send an email to her! I just wonder how many of those little kids play violent video games? They must live in a fantasy world in Utah where nothing bad happens there. I live in the real world where violence happens every day and people loose their lives in war. We were attacked and we should not forget about it!

I have been to Ground Zero and it was a sobering experience for me to see all the devastation that happened. The say in the article that some kids do not remember and feel little emotional connection to it. That is BS in my book. I have a connection to Pearl Harbor from learning about it and watching movies and TV programs about it. This will happen for them plus if they get the chance to see it, they will have a connection then.

Priorities...

You know how when you are younger and something is a "top priority"? Well, when I was younger I used to love to be tanned. I would have a beautiful tan from staying out on the lake or going to the beach or swimming in a pool with friends. Well, as I have grown older, things have changed. I no longer worries about a good tan much less have the time to get in the sun.

Normally, I would get burned like in March or April on spring break and I would not peel or burn the rest of the summer. That does not happen now. The only time I get in the sun is when I mow the lawn or on the off chance, go to the beach.

So, we went to the beach over the Labor Day weekend and we had a good time. On Saturday, we stayed out on the beach from 9.30am till 4pm and we all got burnt to a crisp. I did not use any protection unlike my wife and daughter, but they still got burnt as well. We were all hurting that night and next day. I have for the last week peeled off most of the top layer of skin! My face and chest, arms and feet have peeled off and are still peeling at this very day. I told my mother and she was like "I can’t believe that you got this burnt" and I said "I never get into the sun anymore, we don’t live close to the lake and we do not have a pool like when we lived in an apartment." She said "well, I never thought of it like that, I guess you are right."

Being tanned is just not a priority anymore and it is better for my skin anyway. I guess that I am just getting older and maturing a bit more as well.

The Blog...

I have been into pictures more lately than I have been into posting simply because I have not found much that is interesting to me to post about. I like to do the picture thing with my cam phone because it is just so easy and it also takes very good pics. I have read some people's reviews of the phone/cam and I just don’t agree with them on the picture quality.

I am just in a holding pattern until we figure out when we will be going to St. Louis. It really sucks because I don’t know what kind of job to look for and even when we will be there to do this so it is just pointless to do that at the moment.

I have also slacked off of riding and working out lately. It is just hard to get back into it when you stop. I rode this weekend and we got in like 7 miles. I wanted to go on Sunday morning, but my right leg/hip has been hurting ever since I slipped in the pool while we were on vaca at OBX. I went to the chiropractor last week for the back hurting from this and that worked, but my right leg where it joins the hip hurts intermittently and I did not ride Sunday because of this. It is hurting me tonight and I do not know why as all I did today was sleep.

I am always in a constant search for content and readership on my blog. If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to email me. What bothers me is that I do not get a lot of comments from people that "view" this site. I wish that I would get more. So if anyone is out there in cyberspace, please feel free to drop me a line or to or a comment.

Thank you for your patronage.

Music and Videos...

It is cool that this movie has finally been released on DVD here in the states. I remember as a child, my mother taking me to see this show in Beaumont Texas along the 1980 time frame. I got it last night at Best Buy for $19.99!! Not a bad deal for it. The remastered the movie and soundtrack that was done by Queen. I cannot wait to watch it over my 2 days off this week. I found a copy on the net about a year ago and tried to get it. The quality of it sucked and i converted it to a DVD using WinAVIVideoConverter. The quality sucked even more and i never watched it.

What do you get when you combine the lush electronica band Delerium with the Nashville pop group Sixpence None the Richer? The debut album by Fauxliage. Sixpence singer Leigh Nash has been a guest singer with Delerium, but she now teams up as a full partner with the Canadian band's Rhys Fulber and Bill Leeb. The dance beats are dialed down and the melodies have that pop warmth that Nash brought to Sixpence, but the looping grooves and chilled electro-timbres from Delerium remain, especially on tracks like the hook-heavy "All the World." Lyrically, Nash is concerned with love and loneliness for much of the album and tends toward a languid mid-tempo mode that could've benefitted from a few more kick-ass tunes to moderate the mood. It emerges occasionally, like the symphonic electronica cadenza that explodes in the middle of the otherwise wistful "Draw My Life." Despite years in Nashville, there's very little country in Nash's voice, but there is a purity and vibrato-free tone you can hear in country singers from Loretta Lynn to Emmylou Harris. It's a voice that almost demands a more organic, acoustic approach, and Fulber and Leeb provide it, often dialing down the sometimes suffocating synth pads that have marred the last few Delerium releases and replacing them with acoustic guitars and more organic keyboards. Fauxliage doesn't take all of the best from two worlds, but they get a lot of it. --John Diliberto

I have listened to a copy of this and as of now, i am very UNIMPRESSED!! I have followed their career for over 15 years and i have all of their music and many side projects and this is just really bad. Do not expect and of the "old-style" Deleriumish tracks.

New Bigger Beter HDs for portable electronic devices.

I bought a Creative Zen Touch MP3 player in 2005 with a 40gig HDD in it. I have been very happy with it and it is now 2.5 years old. I have looked at the on the market to be able to replace the HDD when it crashes. This might be a good replacement for it. An 80 or 160gig drive would be incredible with at or about the same power consumption as the 40gig!! Wow! It might be worth checking into. I like the interface and reliability of the player and the weight is not all that ad either, it is a bit big but size is no that big of an issue when you have a big collection to put on it.
Toshiba launches 160Gbyte drive for MP3 players

by Richard Wilson

Thursday 6 September 2007

Toshiba's storage device division aims to dramatically increase the hard disk storage capacity of MP3 players with the introduction of an 1.8-inch hard disk drive (HDD) with a 160Gbyte capacity.

The 160Gbyte dual platter MK1626GCB and a second 80Gbyte single platter HDD is being aimed specifically at small form factor consumer electronics devices such as MP3 players and video cameras. Both drives incorporate the CE-ATA interface.

"Consumption of mobile digital media is at an all time high and in turn is driving consumers towards high capacity mobile devices," said Martin Larsson, general manager, Toshiba Europe Storage Device Division.

"With our two new hard disk drives, we are offering consumer electronics designers the perfect medium to develop high performance products that offer the optimum combination of low power consumption and substantial storage in highly portable form factors," said Larsson.

Alongside the increase in capacity, both hard disk drives operate at a relatively slower speed of 3,600rpm which is intended to improve power consumption compared with conventional HDDs.

Baptist preacher and Christian Radio deejay, 58-year-old Tommy Tester of Bristol, Virginia. He was just hanging out at a car wash, in Tennessee, drunk and high, wearing a skirt, "relieving himself in front of children," with an open bottle of vodka and an empty oxycodone prescription sitting in the car. Oh, and he was "offering police officers oral sex."

You can just imagine the cops pulling up to haul off the preacher pervert and their utter disbelief when, instead of showing any shame or denying everything, he offers to suck them off

Authorities identified Tester as the minister of Gospel Baptist Church in Bristol and an employee of Christian radio station WZAP-AM, also in Bristol. WZAP issued a statement asking for prayers and saying Tester has been suspended during an investigation.Tester was released Friday on $1,000 bail.
A hearing is scheduled for October.

Childhood TV viewing linked to teen attention problems

I saw this and i wanted to pass this along to you all in cyberspace.

NewScientist.com news service
Reuters and New Scientist staff :

Watching television more than two hours a day early in life can lead to attention problems later in adolescence, according to a large long-term study.

The roughly 40% increase in attention problems among "heavy" TV viewers was observed in both boys and girls, and was independent of whether a diagnosis of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder was made prior to adolescence.

"Those who watched more than two hours, and particularly those who watched more than three hours, of television per day during childhood had above-average symptoms of attention problems in adolescence," Erik Landhuis of the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand, wrote in his report, published in Pediatrics on Tuesday.

Symptoms of attention problems included short attention span, poor concentration, and being easily distracted. The findings could not be explained by early-life attention difficulties, socio-economic factors, or intelligence, says the team.

"This latest study adds to the growing body of evidence that suggests parents should take steps to limit the amount of TV their children watch," adds Bob Hancox, one of the researchers.

Mundane reality
The team studied the long-term habits and behaviours of more than 1000 children born in Dunedin, between April 1972 and March 1973. The children aged 5 to 11 watched an average of 2.05 hours of weekday television. From age 13 to 15, time spent in front of the television rose to an average of 3.1 hours a day.

Young children who watched a lot of television were more likely to continue the habit as they got older, but even if they did not, the damage was done, the study said.
"This suggests that the effects of childhood viewing on attention may be long lasting," Landhuis notes. He offers several possible explanations for the association.

One is that the rapid scene changes common to many TV programs may overstimulate the developing brain of a young child, and could make reality seem boring by comparison.
"Hence, children who watch a lot of television may become less tolerant of slower-paced and more mundane tasks, such as school work," he writes.
Net effects

It is also possible that TV viewing may supplant other activities that promote concentration, such as reading, games, sports and play, he says. The lack of participation inherent in TV watching might also condition children when it comes to other activities.

The study is not proof that TV viewing causes attention problems, Landhuis notes, because it may be that children prone to attention problems may be drawn to watching television. "However, our results show that the net effect of television seems to be adverse."

Previous studies have linked the sedentary habit of TV watching among children to obesity and diabetes, amongst other public health issues, see Childhood TV and gaming is 'major public health issue).

Music Memories...

Isn’t it funny how certain songs can tie you to a time period or person? The other day I was driving down the road listening to a band called Revenge. The song was called "State Of Shock" and it was a new version released on an album called "One True Passion V2.0" I have the original version called "One True Passion" and the next album called "Gun World Porn" that the song came from. Any way, I am rambling with back information.

So, anyway, I was driving down the road and was listening to the song and it reminded me of when I lived in Nacogdoches Texas in Wind Hill apartments. I had a friend, Jason Rhame, and he loved that song and we would play the hell out of it all the time. He moved away as did I and we kept in touch for several years and then we lost touch. I moved around a little and so did he. Well, I decided to try to find him and I tried to get his parents number in Nacogdoches and called them, no answer, so I went to www.zabasearch.com and did a search for his name and I found it in Houston.

There were several of the name. I called a few and left messages to call me and low and behold I received a call last week from him!! It was good to hear from an old friend from long ago and to catch up on recent times. We talk about once a week and are going to keep up with each other. It is just funny how music can spark memories of events and time…

Mack: The Photocopier Squeals

This kind of relates to my last 2 posts about the end of summer and the returning to school for the kind.  My many thanks to Mac Hall for letting me post this.

The Office Photocopier Squeals

The office photocopier can be a marvelous source of wisdom as well as of trivia. Sometimes one clears the scanner glass and learns what joys and revelations a fellowship / church / ministry / outreach / under the inspired leadership of Reverend Doctor Bishop Brother So-and-So has planned for the next Sunday.

Our lesson for today, however, is taken from a science quiz, the original of which was left in The Machine that knows all.  Here are some of the many connected bits of knowledge our tenth-graders are expected to master systematically:

What substance releases hydroxide ions in solution?

What category of elements makes up Group 2 in the Periodic Table?

What are single-celled prokaryotes, organisms that lack a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles?

Define abiotic factors.

What is the biological mass in an ecosystem called?

What is a form of asexual reproduction in which the genetic material of the cell is copies and then the cell simply divides in two, forming two identical daughter cells?

What chemical substance slows or prevents the growth of bacterial microorganisms?

How many thanks do we owe Sister Thus-and-Such for playing the piano…wait…wrong document…

I conclude by making my own modest contribution: What is the predominant meter in Garth Brooks' "Friends in Low Places?"

A. Iambic pentameter
B. Trochee
C. Anapest
D. Budapest

For us parents the most important question in September is this: do our children have a set place and time for study?  Is their need to work to improve themselves respected by all in the household?  Do they have a quiet corner and good sturdy table at which to work?  A desk lamp?  Pens and pencils and calculator and paper?  A few basic reference books, beginning with an ordinary dictionary?

After all, life is not entirely about drunken movie starlets named after geographical features.

Another realization of the end of summer...

As I wrote the last post, it got me to thinking about other memories.  One was that with the end of summer, there would be more order at the house. All of the kids have been out for the summer and have been able to say up all night and watch TV or surf the net.  They would sleep all day and repeat this again.  I was not real bad about this; perhaps only when I had a friend over and we would watch movies, o net was available back then. With the advent of school approaching, kids have to go to sleep at a descent time.  Our time for daughter is 10.30pm to be in bed and asleep. Not to be up asking questions and saying I forgot or I need to tell you something. Growing kids need their sleep and rest and this is an issue that we try to make daughter understand.  I was really never that bad about sleep.

Another realization is that there are no more real holidays until Thanksgiving and Christmas. Yes it is a long stretch until then.  Halloween comes around, but that is not a  holiday unless you are a pagan then you might try to get the day off. I can remember when I was in college having to go to football games during that weekend with the band.  When I was younger, I would go skiing with my father to Colorado. So that was something to look forward to during that long stretch between September and November.  After that, Christmas comes very quick so I would make my Christmas list and give it to all concerned…

Perhaps more later as I think about things.

The End Of Summer...

Well my friends, another summer has come to a close.  Labor Day has come and tomorrow it will have gone the way of all other holidays of yesteryear.  With the closing of summer, all the kids will be going back to school with their mothers not believing that they have advance to another grade and they have grown another 2 inches!  One might say “ We just bought you jeans in March, I can’t believe that you have outgrown them.”  I have heard my wife say that many times.  With the closing of summer, people scurry around to get last minute items on the school list that their kids need.

I always hated the last day before school started because the realization was there that school will start tomorrow.  Understand though, I did not dislike school. The Jerry Lewis Telethon that plays all day Labor Day long was always a final reminder to me that summer is officially over.   I always had a friend over that day and we would play but they had to go home because school was the next day.  I would always look forward to the weekends so I could go or have company at my house or stay with a friend on Friday night.  Another sign in the finality of summer is the fact that the day are starting to get shorter and the night longer.  With a hurried pace, kids will be going to school and getting assignments to take home and projects to work on.  With the Labor Day weekend nearly finished, families will finish up their last minute vacations and will return home to get things in order for the new school season.  But with the ending of summer, some things come anew.

I always anticipated the starting of a new Television Season as the ending of summer always marked a new season of new shows and the continuation of old TV series.  Yes, the summer season of reruns is nearly over with the ending of summer. I can remember me eagerly awaiting the newest episode of Saturday Night Live or way back in the day, Miami Vice. With the ending of summer, the Big Networks will do Labor Day Marathons of the big TV hits from the last season so as to let everyone that did not get to see them the last year or missed a few episodes to catch up and get ready for the shocking conclusion that left you hanging in May of that year. Labor Day was always bitter sweet for me.  It meant that most of my Friday Nights were tied up with Football Games and performing with the band and long trips to away games.  They were hot trips as in Texas “winter” never really hit until December or January and the band uniforms were wool. It was also a time to make new friends that might have moved into the town and reunite with old friends that you lost touch with over the summer.

The end of summer also meant that it was time to get new clothes for the upcoming school year.  I always love to go to the mall and get the latest fashion for men and getting a few new pairs of shoes. I was always a coat man and I love to be able to get a new one for the new year and I could not wait until it was cold enough to wear it! Yes my friends, the end of summer is and always will be a bitter sweet time for us all…

God Bless!
