Toshiba's storage device division aims to dramatically increase the hard disk storage capacity of MP3 players with the introduction of an 1.8-inch hard disk drive (HDD) with a 160Gbyte capacity.
The 160Gbyte dual platter MK1626GCB and a second 80Gbyte single platter HDD is being aimed specifically at small form factor consumer electronics devices such as MP3 players and video cameras. Both drives incorporate the CE-ATA interface.
"Consumption of mobile digital media is at an all time high and in turn is driving consumers towards high capacity mobile devices," said Martin Larsson, general manager, Toshiba Europe Storage Device Division.
"With our two new hard disk drives, we are offering consumer electronics designers the perfect medium to develop high performance products that offer the optimum combination of low power consumption and substantial storage in highly portable form factors," said Larsson.
Alongside the increase in capacity, both hard disk drives operate at a relatively slower speed of 3,600rpm which is intended to improve power consumption compared with conventional HDDs.
