Photography Tech Tip: Minolta/Sony solution against hot pixels, stuck pixels

Solution against hot pixels, stuck pixels.

I noticed this tonight on a photo shoot while doing very long exposures at night.

Once a month, when switching off, the SLR camera will shoot a black image (not even opening the shutter) and look for stuck pixels to update the “dead pixel map” of the camera. The switching off appears slower when this happens (the red light will blink a little longer), but after this step the problem is automatically corrected.

If you want to correct it by yourself, the only thing that you have to do is to change the date in the camera menu, move it forward at least further than the next 1st day of the next month, switch off the camera (let it do its little game of red light), switch it on again, shoot one picture, go to the menu and change the date back, then switch off the camera.

After this, your Sony camera updated its hot pixel mapping and knows where to expect them. It will automatically remove them from the picture and just interpolate values from the neighboring pixels. Instead of having an ugly white spot, you’ll get a microscopic and all-but-invisible loss of resolution (one-pixel resolution loss out of 6 to 20 million is still acceptable, isn’t it?)

It works with all Sony SLR cameras (and older Minolta or Konica/Minolta cameras). To be kept somewhere in the back of our memory.

Golden Morning

Golden Morning, originally uploaded by RMStringer.

Taken in OFallon Illinois. It was about 12 DegF that morning.

If i would have not said where this photo was taken, one could assume that it is anywhere in the world. The snow gives it a desolate look. The sun glowing off the snow looks like it could be in the tundra or some other location like that.

Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/1600)

I happened to look up and i saw all the pine resin on a spot where the limb had been cut. I thought that i looked very interesting and i happened to have my camera with the 70-300mm lens on it. I placed it in Macro mode and that is what i got. It has some great Bokeh and Depth of Field.

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel

IH64 West in Virginia.

Inside the tunnel at the bottom of it heading west. I thought that this would be a neat picture if it came out well. This was the best of the set. I did get some interesting effects while i was in the car trying this. Our speed was 55mph. I shot this photo in the "Action" program.

Sitting

Sitting, originally uploaded by RMStringer.

This was taken in Virginia as well.

I was finally able to get her to sit on the back of the sectional sofa where i was able to get a full length photo of her.

Purple Rose...

Purple Rose..., originally uploaded by RMStringer.

This was taken in Midlothian Virginia where i used to live.

I used a Black Flash mode with Apature Priority to take this photo. I turned out very clear and if you look, you will see a rain drop on one of the petals. I also used the Cloudy weather setting. The flash did not wash out the flower like happens a lot when you do a macro.

Exposure: 0.01 sec (1/100)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 60 mm
ISO Speed: 400

Not Supposed To Be There...

Not Supposed To Be There..., originally uploaded by RMStringer.

She will be on her way to live with me starting this December.

This is a wonderful shot of our cat sitting where she is not supposed to. She likes to climb and get on high places. I think that it was well framed and love the lighting and contrast. She is very photogenic and i wonder if she does not pose for me sometimes. When i start taking photos of her, it looks like she knows what i am doing...
